SF Sketchfest is thrilled to pay Tribute to the cast and creators of "Derek & Simon" with a night of clips, scenes, and stories. "Derek & Simon: The Show" is an 11-episode web-based series of comedic shorts from a mash-up of the unique comedy brains in Derek Waters, Simon Helberg and Bob Odenkirk. Streamable on SuperDeluxe.com, back in 2007, cast members included Eric Edelstein and Jake Johnson.
Derek Waters and Simon Helberg were friends doing comedy in Los Angeles, performing in the sketch group "Haja Fresh" at Second City, when it was noticed by Naomi Odenkirk that they were each 26, dark-haired, blue-eyed opposites of each other -- with Simon's manic/neurotic energy, and Derek's low-key, is he actually stoned? energy. And on that basis it was suggested they pair-up for a two-hander. Bob Odenkirk came on to direct; Bernie Brillstein Executive Produced.
The web series was preceded by a 2005 pilot originally made for HBO; a pilot that was ahead of its time and quite innovative, in that the half hour consisted of two 12-minute stories (with titles and end credits for each), and no home-base locations for the friends -- it never showed where these guys lived or worked -- the stories followed them out-n-about the city. The HBO pilot featured guest stars Casey Wilson and Emily Rutherford in one story about a spontaneous all-nighter, "A Bee and a Cigarette"; and the other story, "The Pity Card," about a questionable choice of bringing a first-date to the Holocaust Museum, co-starred Ashley Johnson, Bill Hader and Zach Galifianakis, the latter of which was an official selection at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.
